ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, as well as the total polyphenolic contents, of crude extracts from Sesamum radiatum (S. radiatum) using a maceration method with solvents of varying polarity. The antimicrobial effects were tested on both bacteria and fungi utilizing a disc diffusion technique and antioxidant activity using a DPPH scavenging activity assay. Spectrophotometric assays were employed to examining the total polyphenolic contents. Methanolic extract demonstrated antifungal properties against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, with inhibition zones (IZ) of 20±1.16 and 20±0.58 mm, respectively. Additionally, the extract of S. radiatum exhibited the most effective antibacterial effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, with IZ of 14±1.74 and 14±1.16 mm, respectively. The extract also demonstrates the strong antioxidant properties at 60%. Total phenolic contents found out that the total polyphenolic contents material changed into inside the variety of 127.75±0.45 to 46.52±0.03 mg gallic acid equivalents/g with the highest cost shown in ethyl acetate extract. The overall flavonoids content became the range of 474.61±0.05 to 229.51±0.07 mg quercetin equivalents/g with maximum price recorded from the ethyl acetate, while the total tannins content was in the range of 174.89±0.21 to 57.18±0.05 mg tannic acid equivalents/g with the highest value found in the methanol extract. In conclusion, the plant that has been explored is teeming with bioactive compounds and bursting with both antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. This richness holds the promise of fascinating applications in the realms of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, inviting its use to imagine possibilities.
